Tranformation In Nigerian Politics by Dayo Onibiyo

LEARNING is one of the most difficult things in the world, particularly when it requires change which is unfortunately fortunate to be the only constant thing globally…

The difficulty is not seeing the change or knowing the act of the change, but facing the reality that the end of the illicit gains from the old ways which are always unprogressive, selfish, impositional and back-door arrangements have come. Euphemistically, this is referred to as “shortcut”, which is not available in the dictionary and encyclopedia of success, for if attained through “shortcut” it will always be temporary, counter-productive and disastrous for the beneficiary, on who the wrought of God is inevitable.

GOD demonstrated His hatred and deep anger against ‘shortcut’ when he decided to say “come let Us make man in Our own image…” though He has all the powers to command them to be, just the way He commanded other things like trees, oceans, etc. to be and they were. He didn’t condemn Cain for offering substandard sacrifice to Him but for ‘cutting short’ the life of his brother, Abel. These examples are Divinely documented in The Holy Books – The Bible and The Qur’an.

In our academic setting, Mathematics and English language are the basic requirement to take on any major discipline and in most situations, one is required to apply a “step-by-step” approach to arrive at the right answer and that does not still reflect “details” saying no to shortcut, those who may steal at the final answer.

My area of interest today is POLITICS which has to do with the distribution or power to allocate resources, which ideally are expected to lead to progress, but where a man or woman attain this POWER through the shortcut derogatorily called ‘POLITIRCKS’ how do you expect anything good or successful from such. Let us take a good look, even at the tribunals handling political cases in Nigeria, those who have had their terms cut short for coming through POLITIRCKS has always had nothing to show for it their stolen term in office.

The problem starts with the way we jump onto the Political Podium in Nigeria. Let’s cast our minds back to 1999 when we were bundled into what the Government then called POLITICS thus throwing up half-baked educated people, in experienced public servant, questionable school graduates and lay-abouts who had nothing to lose by jumping in the boat to do politics. Those who learn bitterly in the reputable and unforgettable June 12 were scared to come on board again, responsible men and women were not ready to leave whatever they were doing to involve themselves in another gamble that the likes of Babangida can send down the drain. This gave birth to POLITIRCKS, which ignorantly and stupidly, some people shamelessly call POLITICS!

Professor Attahiru Jega, the INEC chairman can only be significant to Nigerians and indeed the world by ensuring that the real definition of politics be meaningful to Nigerians and the world willing to pick from it, the man need show that a black man, particularly can also play by the standard, damning the consequences. So far, Jega has refused some POLITRICKTIANS into public office, allowed POLITICIANS and stopped the Lawyers’ sleeplessness at the Tribunals thus giving Nigerians some respite and concretizing the emerging politically stable Nigeria. Let me quickly add that more need be done.

It is obvious that Nigeria and indeed Nigerians can no longer afford to face the reality that POLITICS have come to stay and as such the need to get out the CROOKS from amongst those who play the game. That is why Clarkson Eddberg disagreed that politics is not dirty but the “players” who may choose to be dirty or don’t understand any language other than “dirt”.

As a social scientist, the factor inherent in change is “failure”, where it becomes difficult for he or she that needs to change his or her evil ways, they fear being seen failures if they change. The failure implied here is that they have to stop telling lies, deceiving the people, falsifying information or data about people, intentionally damaging people’s character, looting, slander, killing, blackmailing, being diabolical, covetousness, and other things which God and nature detest. Ordinarily, these are things their temperament cannot accommodate.

On the part of the people (Nigerians), we honestly have started reacting to such people by voting them out or refusing them to get on board through our thumbs when we go to the polls. That was indeed a long overdue opportunity Nigerians have anxiously waited for.

The truth is that this new set of few politicians who have found their ways to offices courtesy Jega’s new electoral approach, are now dissociating themselves too, little wonder His Excellency, Capt Idris Wada Ichalla publicly dissociated himself from the rumour making the rounds that he has endorsed the LOs to be the next Chairmen in Kogi State, we sincerely observed too, that the PDP Chairman in Kaduna State went on air to denounce that Government was backing anybody for the Chairmanship slots to be filled in Kaduna State come 1st December 2012.

Earlier, Governor Fashola was embroiled in a deep crisis with his leader for forcing down the throat of the State Electoral body the announcement of some losers as winners even when they are to the favour of his party!

Gradually, real men are appearing in Nigeria politically and we do hope that with the spirit of the fair shift in the 2012 National Award in Abuja on Monday 17th September, things will change; the award is beginning to take cognizance of good governance and real contributions which included core civil servants, private investors, film makers and others.

Soon POLITICKTIANS will fade away like fake smoke in the air and POLITICIANS will emerge; just wait!!!
